“Love, who forgives no one loved to love, / he took pleasure in him so strong, / that, as you see, he still does not abandon me. “Who knows why the verses of the V Canto dell ‘ Inferno Dante are still much cited today. Why do they speak of love, perhaps? Of a story, that of Paolo and Francesca, which, true or false, touches the human soul? The story of the two lovers that Dante delivers to Hell has entered the imagination, also taken as an example of femicide since the protagonist Francesca da Polenta commits adultery by falling in love with her brother-in-law Paolo Malatesta and for this she is killed by her husband, between 1283 and 1285 .
One still wonders if it is right that Dante has them condemned. Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi (guilty lovers) and the philosopher Stefano Bonaga (innocent lovers) confronted this question in an evening organized in Bologna by the Incontri Existential association. In the end, the public chose which thesis to support. And the lovers won.
