Melbourne, January 14, 2022 – OutsideAustralia and give it Open: the Australian immigration minister has visa canceled from Novak Djokovic, despite the tennis number one having won the appeal against the first cancellation of the document. It did so “for reasons of health and good order” and because “it is in the public interest”. “The Morrison government is firmly committed to protecting Australia’s borders, particularly with regard to the Covid-19 pandemic,” the statement read.
Djokovic, not vaccinated against Covid, he had entered Australia in contravention of the government’s rules which only accept immunized foreigners in a pandemic. A first suspension of the visa was immediately taken, costing the tennis player the confinement in a structure for irregular immigrants. However, Djokovic had won the appeal: “He did not get vaccinated because he caught Covid on December 16”, argued his lawyers. Rehabilitated by the judge, he took the field to train at the beginning of the tournament on January 17th. But in recent days, photos have circulated that testify to Djokovic’s participation in public events after December 16: “I did not yet know I was positive”, he justified himself, admitting the violation of the quarantine.
But it wasn’t enough. Now it risks a three-year ban from Australia.
