Draw against RW Essen: Damage to Saarbrücken’s promotion dreams

As of: April 24, 2024 11:00 p.m

1. FC Saarbrücken has suffered a setback in the promotion race of the 3rd league. The Blue-Blacks were able to make up an early deficit in the catch-up game against their direct competitor Rot-Weiss Essen. But the one point won could ultimately be too little.

The starting position wasn’t that bad. In the season finale, 1. FC Saarbrücken had it completely in their own hands to fight their way to a relegation place. From now on, only victories counted.

Early Essen tour by Voelcke

The evening in Ludwigspark against table neighbors Rot-Weiß Essen started very badly – Saarbrücken had to chase a deficit early on. In the 8th minute, after a corner, a shot from the back area hit the crossbar – and from there to the feet of defender Sascha Voelcke, who converted from close range to give the team a 1-0 lead. Birthday boy Tim Schreiber in the Saarbrücker Tor was powerless here.

The home team then pushed for an equalizer – initially they had more of the game, but nothing countable came of it. Little by little, Essen was able to free itself from the pressure and now took control of the game. With the narrow lead we went into the dressing rooms.

With pressure from the cabin

Nothing had been decided yet – but Saarbrücken now had to risk more and build up more pressure. This was also successful at the break, and shortly after the restart there was a double chance for the Saarbrücken team. Uaferro was initially denied by RWE goalkeeper Golz, but the ball came back into the penalty area with a cross. Zeitz was there, but headed just over the goal.

There was excitement in the 62nd minute: RWE midfielder Müsel got the ball on his arm in his own penalty area – but referee Weller allowed the game to continue.

Substitutes Joker Naifi and Rabihic sting

But now it was Saarbrücken’s turn – sniffing the equalizer, also fueled by substitutes Naifi and Rabihic. It was the two of them who played a key role in the equalizer in the 69th minute. From the edge of the penalty area, Naifi moved into the middle, then passed it to Rabihic, who made it 1-1 with a powerful low shot.

Saarbrücken then threw everything forward – but in the end the last bit of luck was missing. It remained a 1-1 draw

Hoping for the competition to slip up

In the promotion race of the 3rd league, one point is actually not enough. The FCS doesn’t have to completely bury its hopes yet – mathematically, a promotion place is still achievable. But the Saarbrücken team also has to hope for slip-ups from the competition in the final spurt of the season and not afford any more themselves.

A win against Halleschen FC next Saturday is a must. Kick-off in Ludwigspark is at 2 p.m.
