The European Judo Championship is scheduled to take place in the Croatian capital Zagreb from Thursday. Belgium will bring eleven judokas (but without Matthias Casse) to the tournament, which is an important indicator a few months before the start of the Olympic Games in Paris.

The European Championship is the first major judo championship of 2024, just before the World Championships in Abu Dhabi (May 19-24). The focus is of course entirely on the Olympic judo tournament in Paris (July 27-August 3). The Belgian selection in Zagreb consists of Jorre Verstraeten (-60 kilograms), Jarne Duyck (-81 kilograms), Sami Chouchi (-90 kilograms) and Toma Nikiforov (-100 kilograms) for the men. For the women, Loïs Petit and Ellen Salens (both -48 kilograms), Amber Ryheul (-52 kilograms), Mina Libeer (-57 kilograms), Alessia Corrao (-63 kilograms), Gabriella Willems (-70 kilograms) and Vicky Verschaere (-78 kilograms) registered.

Last year, the Belgian delegation did not win a medal at the European Championships in Montpellier. The current selection included Toma Nikiforov (gold in 2018 and 2021, silver in 2016 and bronze in 2015), Jorre Verstraeten (bronze in 2019, 2020 and 2022), Sami Chouchi (silver in 2018 and bronze in 2022) and Mina Libeer ( bronze in 2022) has in the past been good for European Championship medals among seniors.

Koen Sleeckx, Technical Director of Top Sport at the judo federation, expects a “different” European Championship due to the upcoming World Cup and Olympic tournament. “It is almost impossible to peak three times in four months,” he looked ahead a few days ago. “The European Championship is therefore mainly a first indicator. For Matthias (Casse) it did not fit into his ideal season planning. With him we focus 100 percent on the Games. But we still have high expectations, especially from Toma Nikiforov and Mina Libeer. A European title remains very nice. Furthermore, the emphasis is on collecting qualification points for the Games.”
