According to local press reports, the Azerbaijani ministry responsible for emergencies has announced that it has not received any information on any accidents in the country’s offshore oil infrastructure or industrial facilities during the last day. Even the spokesperson for the state oil company Socar, Ibrahim Ahmadov, was heard by the Azerbaijani news agency Apa and reported that to gather more information a ship with a group of experts on board was sent to the site of the explosion. According to Socar, adds the local press, the first information collected during the night would confirm that it is a natural phenomenon, caused by an underwater volcano. The Caspian Sea has in fact a high concentration of volcanoes that emit mud and flammable gases. Even the Azerbaijan Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources stated in the morning that natural origin is the most accredited cause and entrusted the Seismological Service Center state to make further investigations. According to Baku, such a volcano it does not pose a threat neither for offshore oil and gas infrastructures, nor for the population.
