Taranto, January 22, 2022 – Far West a Taranto, where a man in a runaway car fired at a police car, injuring two officers. It happened in broad daylight, around 11.30 this morning, in Viale Magna Grecia, in front of numerous passers-by. The man – who according to the reconstruction of the Mosap police union was trying to steal a Porsche Cayenne – was captured immediately after the firefight, the two policemen were not seriously injured.
The shooting
It is 11.30 in the morning when the police car chases theauto with a wanted suspect on board. We are in an area of great transit, close to very popular public places. Before stopping to check, the man suddenly grabs a gun and opens fire at the agents, then fleeing on foot. The bullets break the steering wheel windshield: one policeman is injured in the hand, the other receives help on the spot before being transferred to the hospital in red code. He has a wound in his side, but from initial information it seems that he is not in a serious condition.
In the meantime, the area was completely cordoned off, banned from traffic and in a few minutes it was besieged by the Police and Carabinieri. The suspect is trapped and is immediately captured: his escape lasts a hundred meters. His identity is not yet known. Several shells were recovered on the asphalt. The incident is still being reconstructed by the Mobile Police Station.
The reactions
“We expect the arrested person to pay with the just punishment for having attacked the lives of two servants of the state and that of the citizens who at that moment were in the street”, says Fabio Conestà, general secretary of the autonomous police trade union movement (Mosap ), expressing solidarity with the injured agent and wishing him a speedy recovery. “As far as we know – he continues – the arrested subject was trying to steal a Porsche Cayenne, when he opened fire at the sight of the agents”, he adds.
