Federico Coppa, at work with the lights off: “Rugby Feltre navigates the unknowns”

Rugby Feltre on the first day of preparation

The new coach finds a XV who has been standing still for two years and with morale to be rebuilt. “Goals? Impossible to fix them, for now it would be enough to be able to go on the pitch “

Rugby Feltre has bet on an old acquaintance for the post-covid restart. Federico Coppa is the new coach of the senior grenade team. He is a symbolic man in the provincial rugby world, both as a player, having also played in Serie A, and as a coach, having obtained the under 16 interregional final in June 2018. Now he is at the helm of the first team.

«In my idea of growing up as a coach, the first team is an important point of arrival, I had already thought about it in the past. Then, the fact that it happened this year was a bit of a surprise ».

Can we say that it is the goal of a journey made with the group of young people?

«In reality, it is a path that began a few years ago and which led this group of young people to“ cross the hill ”towards the first team. However, many of the boys who were already on the senior team had already coached them in the past, having done more than one cycle in the youth teams. So I find athletes that I had already followed when they were children ».

«From a technical point of view I would say no, since the levels of play offered by the first teams I would say that I know them well. The management of adults, which is not that of young children, worries me a bit. We need to have a more direct relationship. Then the uncertainty of this season creates some apprehension. I arrive and find a first team group that has been stopped for two years. In this respect, I have a few more concerns. There is a group of guys who have always trained and another part of which, for reasons related both to the covid and to other previous situations, I do not know what the conditions are. We will have to create that rugby attitude that has inevitably been lost recently. I would like these guys to have fun again ».

What were the reasons that led you to accept the position?

«I am involved in Rugby Feltre and I am within this club first as a player and then as a coach. This has always been a stimulus for me to continue training and get to this point. Now we are there and let’s see how it goes ».

What are the goals for this season?

«Impossible to fix them. I believe that no one at the moment is able to give them to themselves. There is great uncertainty around us. I hear of high-level teams that must merge with other realities to be able to bring “a fifteen” onto the field, and still clubs that fail to have the youth teams. At the moment it is important, Sunday after Sunday, to only be able to go on the pitch, enthusing the boys and, if possible, winning games ».
