A Niki Lauda Ferrari 312T in the floor of a vehicle headed for Switzerland. This is the sensational discovery made by the Customs Agency together with the Guardia di Finanza near Chiasso, Como. The agents became suspicious when they read the description made on the customs documents on the goods transported: the definition “fiberglass show car model” immediately triggered the hypothesis of a counterfeit. Suspicions promptly confirmed by checks: the specimen of Ferrari found is a fake replica.

A further clue in this direction is represented by the low value declared, contrasting with the importance of the medium. Furthermore, according to the reconstructions, the exporter was mainly engaged in the construction sector. The word “Ferrari” was also detected inside the rev counter positioned at the height of the dashboard. The appraisal conducted to ascertain any improper use of the intellectual property right of the Emilian brand confirmed that the car was not built by Ferrari Spa. The exporter was thus denounced for counterfeiting, alteration or use of distinctive signs of works by ingenuity or industrial products, as well as for the introduction into the state and trade of products with false signs.

The 312 T played an important part in the history of the Maranello team in F1 between 1975 and 1976. With this model, Niki Lauda won the first of his three world titles, and competed in the first races of ’76, then moving on to 312 T2. The Austrian dominated in the first part of the championship until the terrible burning of the Nurburgring. Returning only 40 days after the accident, Lauda tried to resist James Hunt’s comeback, surrendering in Japan, when he voluntarily retired after a few laps. He made up for it the following year, winning the World Championship before leaving Ferrari.
