Kong Fanyu Wins Women’s Aerials Competition at the 14th National Winter Games

The women’s aerials competition in the open group of freestyle skiing at the 14th National Winter Games took place on February 21 at the Zhalantun Jinlongshan Ski Resort in Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia. Kong Fanyu from Heilongjiang emerged as the champion with an impressive score of 94.82. Shao Qi from the Inner Mongolia team and Liu Xuanchi from the Shaanxi team secured the runner-up and third place positions, respectively.

The competition saw Beijing Winter Olympics champion Xu Mengtao, who represented the Liaoning team, make a mistake during the landing on the last jump, causing her to miss out on a medal. Despite being a famous player of the Heilongjiang team, Kong Fanyu faced tough competition from Xu Mengtao, who had also scored 94.82 points in the first two rounds. However, in the third round, Kong Fanyu achieved a high score of 94.82 with a set of moves carrying a difficulty coefficient of 3.5250. This secured her the championship while Xu Mengtao’s unstable landing led to her scoring only 78.96 points.

Xu Mengtao, a gold medalist at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, expressed her disappointment at missing out on a medal at the 14th Winter Games, stating that no one can always win, and perseverance is key to success. The event marked her third participation at the Winter Games, having won the championship in the 2012 “12th Winter” and falling on the field in the 2016 “13th Winter”.

Despite missing the medal, Xu Mengtao’s performance at the 14th Winter Games was a reminder of the unpredictable nature of sports and the resilience required to continue competing at the highest level.
