Former IAAF president Lamine Diack died. He was overwhelmed by the Russian doping scandal

by admin

Former world athletics president Lamine Diack died overnight at the age of 88 in Dakar, where he returned in May, after being held in France for years due to a corruption affair. He had been head of the International Athletics Federation (Iaaf, 1999-2015) for 16 years, as Primo Nebiolo’s successor. Diack returned to Senegal seven months ago, for the first time since his indictment in 2015. He had been detained for years in France on alleged doping-related corruption in Russia.

In September 2020 he was sentenced by the French justice to four years in prison and a fine of 500,000 euros for corruption. He had filed an appeal but the retrial had not yet been set. The conviction referred to the accusation of hiding cases of doping in Russia or in any case of having delayed sanctions against doped Russian athletes in exchange for funding, as well as having promoted sponsorships and negotiations with Russia. His indictment in another case, still unfinished at trial, had prevented him from returning to Senegal. His passport had been confiscated as part of the control imposed by the judges. In this second case he had been indicted from 27 March 2019, again for corruption, in the context of the assignments of the 2016 Olympics in Rio and 2020 in Tokyo, but also of the World Athletics Championships in Beijing in 2015 and the World Championships in 2017 and 2019, for which Qatar was a candidate.

The judge in charge of the investigations, before his return to Senegal in May, had lifted the ban on leaving the French territory upon payment of a deposit of 500,000 euros corresponding to the sanction imposed, and on condition that he continued to respect the writ of summons. . A famous Senegalese football team, Jaraaf de Dakar (first division), had sold part of its land to pay the sum of money. Lamine Diack had been president of the club twice, in the 1970s and 2000s.
