Look, on page three, at the SWG survey on what Italians think – or rather: what they want – about the war in Ukraine. The answers of the majority of our fellow citizens do not surprise me. But they depress me. So let’s see these answers. When asked what is the “most desirable” scenario, the absolute majority let it be known that they hope for a victory for Russia. To be precise: 46 percent want the conflict to end with Russia retaining control of Crimea and the occupied territories in the south-east. 6 percent even hope for Putin’s armies to occupy the whole of Ukraine. Only 23 percent call for a Ukrainian counter-offensive; 25 percent, in order not to make a mistake, do not know. He does not want. He does not hope. Maybe he doesn’t care. And may it never be that Finland and Sweden take it into their heads to organize a defense in view of a possible Russian attack. The majority (45 percent) do not want them to join NATO, because “the risk of conflict with Russia will increase”. Noble yearning, that for peace. We all agree. But if one is willing to give victory (in part or in whole) to those who have violated peace, invading a sovereign country with tanks and targeting it with missiles, then the doubt arises that the real desire is not peace, but the belly. In the sense of a full stomach: if the war ends, and no matter how, the economic consequences for us also end, and we can avoid tightening our belts. France or Spain, as long as it is magna.
