Henan Team Player Chen Shuo Wins Freestyle Skiing Open Aerials Championship at Fourteenth Winter National Games

The Freestyle Skiing Open Group Aerials event of the 14th National Winter Games kicked off at the Zhalantun Jinlongshan Ski Resort in Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia on February 21. The competition saw Henan team player Chen Shuo emerging triumphant in the men’s individual category, with Heilongjiang team player Kong Fanyu clinching the women’s individual championship.

Chen Shuo, born in 2004, made his first appearance in the National Winter Games after taking part in the International Snow Federation Freestyle Skiing World Cup in 2023. Despite challenging windy conditions at the venue, Chen Shuo displayed remarkable composure as he landed steadily in the third round of the finals, outperforming his competitors and securing the gold medal with 125.97 points.

In the women’s individual category, 30-year-old Kong Fanyu, who has previous accolades including a bronze medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and a gold medal at the 2023 Freestyle Skiing World Championships, displayed her expertise in a fierce competition with the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics gold medalist Xu Mengtao. Ultimately, Kong Fanyu emerged victorious with a score of 94.82 points, securing her third participation in the National Winter Games.

Notably, the athletes who secured medals in the individual freestyle skiing open category were all born after 2000, signifying an emerging talent reserve in aerial skills within China’s freestyle skiing domain. Both Kong Fanyu and Chen Shuo initially trained in gymnastics before transitioning to freestyle skiing and aerial skills, demonstrating the success of cross-border and cross-disciplinary talent selection in fostering talent for the aerials project.

With promising young athletes following in the footsteps of established champions, the future of China’s freestyle skiing aerials project appears to be on a strong trajectory.
