From parquet to mental coaching: the new career of Riccardo Pittis

by admin

TREVISO. Riccardo Pittis, after a life in short shorts, now has a jacket and shirt. From basketball champion to mental coach. How is the new career?

«99 percent of the workload is with companies, managers, entrepreneurs, professionals connected to the world of work. I also had sportsmen, but in much smaller numbers than you can imagine ».

But what is the main modus operandi of a mental coach?

“You can do coaching in two ways: one to one and team coaching or group coaching”.

Now it’s time to explain the differences, first of all with the latter.

“Team coaching concerns people who work in the same field, they must have a team game relationship, while in group coaching they do not necessarily work together, but they are part of the same company and therefore have common goals”.

For the one-to-one, which I imagine implies a closer relationship, the risk is to rely on who is not a mental coach.

“Yes, you can’t go wrong. The common mistake is to rely on non-professionals, on those who have no competence. To become a mental coach I didn’t wake up in the morning inventing the role, I studied and I’m still studying, I learned and learn, I reach goals and I envision new ones “

.

But what are the differences from a practical point of view?

«You work on the dynamics. With the group you do a more generalized work, it cannot make 15 different outfits for 10-15 people, it must be suitable for everyone. It focuses on dynamics that are typical of teams, collaboration, trust, communication. For the individual you go with a tailor-made suit, starting from the specifics of the person, his characteristics and then you work on what are the wishes of the “coachee”, the customer ».

How does it work?

«First there is a zero meeting, we get to know each other, we create a trusting relationship, we try to understand if we are made for each other, to see if we think we can work together. Aspects to work on are established, the objectives of the path chosen by the “coachee”, and a path of sessions is chosen and from there we begin ».

Let’s clarify: it’s not like going to a psychologist.

«Therapy, psychoanalysis is something else, unapproachable. First of all I’m not a psychologist, the skills are other. The psychologist goes to work on various aspects, from the past to the present and possibly to the future, a coach focuses on the present to build a future, the past does not interest me. Understanding what the coachee’s needs are and accompanying him in his desired states, towards his goals. But if he were to tell me “I have an unsolved problem with my father”, I stop him, that is a completely different experience ».

Has Covid changed the way you work?

“Well, what I was doing in person I’m doing remotely. There is no human contact but a telematic relationship. It had an impact on the workload. Last year it was sudden, in March and April there was terror, then there was a recovery and the year ended quite well. But in 2021, as was to be expected, the long wave is very affected. Business budgets were of a certain type in 2020, but they predicted Covid in 2021. So all downwards, including training ».

Is it pro vaccine?

“Very favorably, I would do it right away. And think that until last year I had never had a flu shot. But here there is the risk of dying, it is dramatic that there are those who do not want to do so ».

Is motivation everything?

«At the end of 2020 the requests were mainly on the motivational aspect. Companies had a big problem with stimuli. It was logical given what had happened to us, that there had been a backlash, with respect to arguments or requests on collaboration, on communicating better ».

Will it be the key theme for the world of work?

«The theme of change is on the agenda. It will be epochal and drastic, due to personal and professional habits ».

How much basketball is there in your work?

«I carry everything with me, that’s why I am a mental coach. I wanted to decrypt my sports career, to understand why I had followed a certain type of path. Understanding which dynamics had hindered me from becoming better or more impactful episodes. Like when I turned left handed after my right hand problem. I didn’t think it was possible or imaginable, but I did it. It was about the mind. I started studying from there ».

Would it have been useful to have such support when you were a player?

«In hindsight, since I have been a mental coach I tell myself that if I had had the same skills I would have been a better player. Because we often put obstacles on our own. Now that I know how to get rid of it, I would have been able to avoid situations or shortcomings ».

Was the management of the group decisive in your years at Benetton?

«I recognize skill in management, great masters like Meneghin or D’Antoni showed how well you interact in the locker room. Then you know that you will never win alone, and a better myself might not have decided on the victories. Could I have done better? There is no regret, no regret, it is just a consideration. I believe we can always improve ».

But basketball certainly can’t forget that. So let’s see if he is also a fortune-teller: who wins the Scudetto, Euroleague and NBA?

“In Italy Milan, in Europe Barcelona, I don’t follow US basketball much but I say Brooklyn, there is D’Antoni, I have always cheered for him”. –
