Genoa bets on bicycles in the name of sustainable mobility

The Smart Move project earned the Municipality of Genoa the Urban Award 2021, the award for sustainable mobility that is recognized every year for the best projects related to bicycles carried out by municipal administrations throughout the country. Now in its 5th edition, the award aims to reward virtuous Municipalities and encourage municipal bodies to invest in the future, supporting projects related to bicycles and Smart Mobility.

The jury, composed among others by Marino Bartoletti, the founder of the Ludovica Casellati prize, the deputy secretary of Anci, Antonella Galdi, awarded the first prize to the Municipality of Genoa “for the many initiatives in favor of soft mobility in relation to bike-to-work and al bike-to-school».

A work that involved the Municipality and numerous associations of citizens convinced of the need to make urban mobility more efficient according to criteria of environmental, social and economic sustainability. Among the infrastructural interventions implemented by the administration, the 67.8 kilometers of bike lane and cycle paths completed, together with the 50 new areas for parking bicycles located mainly in the historic center and in the two velostations at the railway stations.

The intervention to implement the bike sharing (16 stations, for a total of 100 bicycles, 26 of which are pedal assisted) and the experimentation of road circulation of electric micro-mobility devices and the establishment of three zones 30 in the city center (Sestiere del Molo, Spianata Castelletto and Centro Storico ).

Furthermore, thanks to the collaboration between institutions and parents’ associations, bicibus and pedibus routes have been identified and activated, with the aim of further spreading the practice in the municipal area, awareness-raising campaigns and invitations to use the bicycle.
