German tennis team reaches finals in Brazil

Of course it wasn’t a vacation trip. Even though Angelique Kerber didn’t end up playing in the qualifying game for the German tennis women in the Billie Jean King Cup. Brazil is certainly not a bad place for a working, young mother to spend a few days without a child.

But Kerber probably didn’t have much time to relax in São Paulo – even though daughter Liana stayed at home for the first time since her return to the professional tour in January. However, because Kerber had traveled to Brazil a little later than her teammates and then needed a little more time to adapt to the time zone and climate, team captain Rainer Schüttler decided not to nominate his best player in many years for the individual.

And because Laura Siegemund won surprisingly confidently against Brazil’s top player Beatriz Haddad Maia (6:4, 6:2), Tatjana Maria against Laura Pigossi (2:6, 6:4, 6:4) and then again on the second day against Siegemund Carolina Alves (6:1, 2:6, 6:3) won, but Kerber’s planned double at the end on Saturday evening alongside Anna-Lena Friedsam was also cancelled.

After the 3-1 win (the only point for Brazil was secured by Haddad Maia against Friedsam), Kerber now has the next chance to play for Germany in the final round of the national competition. This takes place in Seville in November.

First, the German players go back home, where the prestigious tournament will be played in Stuttgart from this Monday. Kerber will also be playing in Germany for the first time since the birth of her daughter 14 months ago. “It will be difficult with the time change and the jet lag,” announced Kerber in Brazil
