The BR Volleys made a surprising false start in the playoff final of the German volleyball championship. In the first of a maximum of five finals, the defending champion lost to long-term rivals VfB Friedrichshafen on Monday in a five-set thriller at home 2:3 (22:25, 25:18, 25:21, 20:25, 11:15).

The second game will take place on Wednesday in Friedrichshafen. Whoever of the two teams achieves three wins first will then be the sole record champions with 14 titles.

How the BR Volleys game analyst is preparing for the final

The BR Volleys and Friedrichshafen decide the championship between themselves. Just like in the last ten finals. What sounds monotonous on paper is actually volleyball at a top level indoors. Berlin analyst Alexandre Leal on preparing for the eternal series. By Lynn Kraemermore

BR volleys show mixed performance

In front of 6,541 spectators in the Max-Schmeling-Halle, the hosts initially did not exert the usual pressure with their serves and were unable to compensate for this shortcoming with some spectacular blocks. The Friedrichshafen team showed more dynamic attacking actions and their win in the first set was narrow but deserved.

In the BR volleys, light and shadow continued to alternate in the second round. A spectacular single block by Johannes Tille for a 10:8 lead was promptly followed by a carelessly awarded point by Marek Sotola. But after a score of 13:13, the Berliners seemed to get going. Timothee Carle and Sotola temporarily turned up the attack.

However, after leading the set 2-1 on volleys, VfB showed their ability to take the game. In the fourth section, after 17:17, he moved ahead to 22:17 and thus reached the tiebreak. The deciding set was still open until 6:6, then the guest took an 11:6 lead and then headed undeterred towards victory.
