Giro 2021, flying goals in Agordo and Rocca Pietore

On Monday 24 May the queen Sacile-Cortina stage will also touch Belluno but due to the pandemic it was decided not to pass it through Piazza dei Martiri

The countdown begins for the passage of the Giro d’Italia which on May 24 will cross half the province in Sacile-Cortina, the queen stage of race number 104. It will be a spectacular stage, with climbs on Cansiglio, Fedaia, Pordoi and Giau for a total of 212 kilometers of development and 5,700 meters of elevation gain.

However, in all likelihood, the passage through the historic center of Belluno will be missing. The capital will only be touched (between 12.47 and 13.03): the runners, in fact, will arrive from the Santa Caterina roundabout in Ponte nelle Alpi, along the Sinistra Piave to Levego and Sagrogna, and in all likelihood they will go up via Lungardo, via San Biagio , via Tissi and via Fantuzzi, before reaching the intersection of the Cerva and heading towards Agordo (between 13.26 and 13.46) where, in Piazza della Libertà, the first of the two flying goals will be placed (the second is set at Rocca Pietore , between 14.05 and 14.30).

No passage in Piazza dei Martiri, therefore. In recent days the municipal administration, together with civil protection and traffic police, has made assessments on the matter and it seems that the decision is, in fact, that of a “soft” passage, avoiding the transit in the good living room of the capital, especially for do not create gatherings.

After all, it will be, like the one held in the autumn of 2020, a “subdued” Giro from the point of view of color and the presence of the public.

For example, there will be no starting “Village” (or in any case it will be reduced to a minimum and reserved only for insiders) and there will be no advertising “Caravan” that traditionally precedes the race, enlivening streets, towns and cities.

As last year, the Caravan should also be digital in this 2021: in 2020, each stage at 1.30 pm, 2.00 pm and 3.40 pm for all users connected to the giroditalia.it site had the opportunity to play, have fun and win together with the sponsors and partners of the pink race.

The last time the Giro colored the city center was in 2014: it was May 29 and Piazza dei Martiri hosted the start of the Belluno – Panarotta Refuge (Valsugana). There was Colombian Nairo Quintana in the pink jersey and there was great enthusiasm for Davide Malacarne from Lamon who, a few days earlier, had come close to winning in Lugo-Sestola.

That day the people in the center were really large: both in Piazza dei martiri and in Piazza Duomo, where the stage for the signature sheet had been placed.

The last passage in the capital is dated 2016: the Alpago – Corvara ran and even on that occasion the historic center of Belluno was only touched by the runners who, coming from Ponte nelle Alpi, crossed the Ponte degli Alpini to head immediately towards the ‘Agordino. That year, however, the caravan was there and stopped right in the central Piazza dei martiri. –
