Auronzo re-proposes his candidacy, while the one of two days between the Conca and the Colle di Belluno remains standing
Giro d’Italia, at work for 2022. The day after the stage in Cortina, the province is already working (better: continuing to work) for the arrival of the pink race next year.
Auronzo is working on it first of all for an arrival, of course, at the Tre Cime. The candidacy had already been put forward by the municipal administration last year in anticipation of an arrival in 2021 but then things went differently.
“The project remains standing and we are working towards 2022”, confirms the deputy mayor of Auronzo, Enrico Zandegiacomo. «We had requested the Veneto Region to host a stage of the Giro for 2021, the year in which Auronzo is the“ European City of Sport ”, however, saying that we are also ready for 2022. We are available. It will now be up to the Region and RCS to make the necessary assessments. The Giro would be a further opportunity to promote our mountains internationally ».
But be careful: for the next few months a Belluno “derby” could emerge. Yes, because we also continue to work on the Valbelluna – Alpago project. The project, shared by the administrations of Alpago (leading body), Chies, Tambre, Ponte nelle Alpi, Belluno and Limana, provides for a stage finish in Nevegal and a time trial leg to be carried out entirely in the Conca.
For La Conca it would be an absolute first of absolute value, both from a promotional point of view and from a technical point of view. So far, in fact, the Alpago has only hosted some transits of the pink race and the start of the stage that ended in Corvara in 2016.
For Nevegal, however, it would be the fourth arrival after those of 1962 (success of Guido Carlesi), of 1963 (victory of Arnaldo Pambianco) and of 2011 (year of the spectacular hill climb from Piazza dei Martiri to Colle, with success of Alberto Contador) .
If the Auronzo municipal administration project were to materialize, however, the one at the Auronzo refuge would be the eighth arrival in the history of the pink race. The last time of the Giro at the Auronzo refuge was on 25 May 2013: a day of absolute spectacle, with Vincenzo Nibali winning the Silandro – Tre Cime in the pink jersey and under a heavy snowfall. Behind him the Colombian Rigoberto Uran and the Australian Cadel Evans. Going back in time, in 2007 the Trento – Tre Cime saw the success of Riccardo Riccò in front of his teammate Leonardo Piepoli. In 1989, however, the Padova – Tre Cime was raced and the Colombian “Lucho” Herrera won.
The arrival of 1981 (departure from San Vigilio di Marebbe) rewarded the Swiss Beat Breu but above all Giovanni Battaglin who took the pink jersey and kept it until the final arrival in Verona. Spanish victory, however, in 1974: in front of everyone in the Pordenone – Tre Cime was Josè Manuel Fuente. In 1968, the Gorizia-Tre Cime di Lavaredo saw the victory of Eddy Merckx. The first time at the Auronzo refuge was in 1967 but the stage was however canceled due to the excessive number of pushes that the riders received. Auronzo and Alpago-Valbelluna, therefore.
But if there were Cortin’s re-nominationto re-propose in 2022 the stage which, due to the weather, on Monday has little or no value in the Ampezzo area?
