The first pink jersey Van der Poel is already confronting the specialists of the fight against time: in the 9.2 kilometers great expectations for Dumoulin and Yates

The Giro d’Italia restarts from Budapest with the second stage, the first time trial of just 9.2 kilometers (out of a total of 26 in the whole Corsa Rosa) in the heart of the Hungarian capital. The official start of the first rider is scheduled at 2 pm, while the pink Van der Poel jersey is expected to cross the finish line around 5.10 pm. Only one time measurement, at kilometer 7.9.

2nd Stage, May 7 ***

The stage

Departure from the Heroes’ square to point towards the Danube which separates the two souls of the city. There are about twenty curves and the track forces you to continually relaunch the bike. You have to be explosive rather than specialists. After the chronometric survey, the last 1500 meters uphill, and partly on the cobblestones: the first 200 meters last at 10%, with peaks of 14%, then another 200 meters at 7%, then the track flattens to 3.4%. You arrive in the historic center of Buda, on an asphalted background, on this side of the Danube.

And favorites

Mathieu van der Poel will do everything to keep the pink jersey and he should succeed. Richard Carapaz, Simon Yates and especially Tom Dumoulin will not stand by and watch. Another name to keep an eye on is that of the German Lennard Kämna, world junior time trial champion in 2014, already in evidence in the final climb of the first stage. As for the Italians, there are two riders to follow: Matteo Sobrero, Italian time trial champion, and Edoardo Affini, European junior time trial champion in 2019 and third in the Elite race the following year.
