A European champion title and three silver medals: this is the rich loot won by the two athletes of the Equa Team of Santa Cristina, Fabrizio Cornegliani and Ana Maria Vitelaru at the European handbike championships held in Schwanenstadt, in Upper Austria. Cornegliani, handbiker from Miradolo, won his first continental gold in the H1 category, putting Hordies (Belgium) and Jahoda (Czechoslovakia) behind him, while in the road race he finished second. «He was only missing the European champion jersey – comments the patron of the Equa Team, Ercole Spada – now we can say that Fabrizio has won everything, Italians, Europeans and World Championships, in addition to silver at the Paralympics in Beijing. In Austria, Cornegliani played a perfect time trial, on a course he liked. In the line race, however, the opponents were in the wake all the time, and in the end he was beaten in the sprint ».
Vitelaru among the H5s came second both in the road race and in the time trial “Ana has improved considerably – Spada underlines – she also raced with the old handbike, now the new one has arrived which weighs 7 kg less, which will translate into even more times lower in competitions. She trains constantly and I am sure she will go even faster ». Overall, the blue team won 21 medals at the European Championships: 9 gold, 6 silver, 6 bronze. Congratulations from the coach Rino De Candido and the staff made up of Pierpaolo Addesi, Francesco Parmegiani and Silvano Perusini: “I was sure it would be an interesting European, but I didn’t think it was so full of successes – says De Candido – A round of applause to my boys”. –
