Six selected student players, including Gong Juntong, the son of the Chinese men’s basketball legend Gong Xiaobin, will study in the United States this fall.
Cai Chongxin Basketball Scholarship is a public welfare project, its predecessor was the “Chinese Basketball Association Elite Program” launched in 2019. At that time, the Chinese Basketball Association selected four players, Li Xinyi, Wang Fuchuan, Zhang Yijiong and Sun Xiangxiang, to study in the United States. Due to the epidemic, the selection of players was temporarily interrupted, and operations will resume in 2021. This project is for the whole society to select young people of school age who aspire to become outstanding basketball players to study in boarding high schools in the United States, and provides comprehensive scholarships including tuition, school fees, etc. during the study period until graduation from high school.
After registration was launched in September 2021, the scholarship has received nearly 500 application materials from all over the country. Through the preliminary screening, 32 student players were selected to participate in the interview and training camp to be held in Beijing in early December 2021.
The coaching team of the training camp is headed by Wang Fei, the former head coach of the Chinese Men’s Basketball Association, Kuang Lubin, deputy director of the Coaches Committee of the Chinese Basketball Association, Song Xiaobo, Wang Fei, directors of the Youth Committee of the Chinese Basketball Association, and other 6 people as expert reviewers. The interview and other links conducted a comprehensive assessment of the applicant’s basketball level, physical quality, language ability, and comprehensive quality. In the end, Feng Ao, Gong Juntong, Huan Sifeng, Huan Sinan, Song Yijia and Yang Junxi stood out.
Among the selected players, Gong Juntong, born in 2008, is 1.97 meters tall. His father is Gong Xiaobin, a famous Chinese basketball player. The brothers Huan Sifeng and Huan Sinan, who were born in 2007, are from the Tsinghua High School. Yang Junxi is from the High School Affiliated to Peking University, and his father is a basketball lover. Feng Ao is from the No. 4 Middle School of Changchun Automobile Economic and Technological Development Zone. He is 1.93 meters tall and works as a guard. Song Yijia is the only girl among the selected players. She comes from Shenzhen No. 2 Experimental School, and neither of her parents have a basketball background.
According to reports, the basketball level of the first four players to study in the United States in 2019 has improved significantly. Among them, Sierra Canyon High School, where Wang Fuquan is located, won the 2021-2022 California Intercollegiate Federation (CIF) league championship. She is the first Chinese female student-athlete to win this honor.
