The two-time road world champion Julian Alaphilippe, among the strongest cyclists from 2018 to 2021, is experiencing a profound crisis of results. Hence the attack from Lefevere, the head of Soudal Quick Step: «He’s not worth the money we give him»

Julian Alaphilippe from 2018 to 2021 was one of the best cyclists around: two road world championships, one Milan-Sanremo, the Strade Bianche, two weeks in the yellow jersey at the Tour de France, a second place at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, beaten in the sprint from the champion Pogacar. Successes that convinced the managers of Soudal Quick-Step to let him sign a contract with very important sums (2.3 million euros per year), a move which, however, did not bring the expected results. Alaphilippe, known to all as the “Musketeer”, has disappeared. For three years he has been his distant relative. In 2022 he didn’t even show up at the Tour, where he has always competed as a protagonist. It was the fault of the serious fall two months earlier at the Liège-Bastogne-Liège, which had caused him a haemopneumothorax, the fracture of a shoulder blade and two ribs.

Alaphilippe in crisis, his boss Lefevere accuses

Unfortunately for the 31-year-old, at the helm of his Soudal Quick-Step is Patrick Lefevere, who has always been known for his inability to mince words. The manager didn’t spare him either, the only Frenchman in history capable of winning two World Cups in a row: “It’s inadequate for his salary as a champion”, one of the latest digs, with Alaphilippe’s contract expiring in 2024. As if he didn’t if that were enough, Lefevere also judged his private life, all while the Frenchman is preparing for his return to European roads set for Saturday on the Het Nieuwsblad circuit in Belgium: «Julian is a good boy – the words of the Soudal Quick boss – Step — but after signing his mega contract we never saw him again. As you get older, you need to take better care of yourself. You have to train harder and he’s not doing that.”

“Too much partying and alcohol”, the wife’s harsh reply

Then the heaviest thrust: «At his house there are too many parties and too much alcohol», with a clear reference to the couple that the best climber of the 2018 Tour de France forms with the former cyclist Marion Rousse, who has become director of the women’s version of the Grande Boucle : «Julian is seriously fascinated by Marion. Maybe too much. I spoke to him in November. We were with Marion and her manager Dries Smets. I told him: “You can’t continue like this. If you do anything wrong again, I will fire you immediately.”

Accusations that have not left Marion Rousse herself indifferent: «Whatever Mr. Lefevere’s opinion towards me, his attack on our private life is unacceptable – the woman’s reply via social media – know that no, I don’t drink alcohol, never. Please know that we don’t go to parties because with a 3 year old we prefer to be fit in the morning. Furthermore, you will not be able, as you have already told me, to stop me from working to keep me busy simply being with Julian during her career. I am enthusiastic about the role I occupy and know that I have many plans. And I repeat that under no circumstances will I allow him to talk about my private life. Stop it and show more respect and… class.” Pascal Chanteur, president of the UNCP, the runners’ union, also reiterated the concept, who “totally deplores” Lefévère’s comments and defends the runner, inviting the manager to no longer settle accounts in public with the two-time world champion .
