Hyundai Bayon: engines and photos of the small crossover

Innovative design for the model that will be placed under the Kona. Length of 4.18 meters, it will arrive in July, probably only with the Mhev petrol versions. The price? Probably starting from around 19 thousand euros

It is called Bayon and if you think that there is at least a linguistic link with France, you are right. The name of Hyundai’s new compact crossover derives from the city of Bayonne, the main center of the Atlantic Pyrenees: on the one hand the Korean house wanted to identify the model in a very European way and on the other wanted to give a lively image as indeed the town has. . There length or the step are practically equivalent to those of the Kona (respectively 4.18 m and 2.58 m), but the lower height (1.49 m), which translates into a more streamlined and sporty line. The plastic protections for the nose and wheel arches also decrease: the nature of this B-Suv, in fact, is more urban than off-road. Inspired by the Nexo, the front adopts, like its sister Kona, thin optical groups interposed between the bonnet and bumper as well as a large lower slit that extends under the nose simulating a skid plate and rear-view mirrors with a very particular shape. The side sculpted with strong angled carvings and the third upright are equally original. The rear is even more complex, marked by an element that recalls a skidplate: the tailgate has a dihedral shape enhanced by a luminous profile between the boomerang-shaped lighting groups.

The interior is less revolutionary than the exterior, but still has character: it is available in three colors (full black, dark gray + light gray and dark gray with safari green seams and inserts) and develops on well-stretched horizontal lines, accentuated by a continuous grille in the middle of the dashboard that elegantly conceals the air conditioning vents. There is also ambient lighting with soft LED light for the main compartments and the lower area of the passenger compartment. In general, the impression is that of having a large space available. The top audio system is signed Bose and the infotainment provides a screen with diagonal up to 10.25 “ with navigator, connectivity (even wireless) Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and the Bluelink services of the Hyundai ecosystem. The setup is the same as the Kona, with a keyboard equipped with “physical” shortcuts for the main functions below the display and separate climate controls (located a little below). There is also a 10.25 “display for the virtual and reconfigurable instrumentation, in order to present the strictly necessary information or a more complete management. At the rear there is a split 60/40 sofa without a passage point for long loads. Suitable for two passengers, it can also accommodate a third occupant for short distances. The trunk has a declared volume of 411 liters; overturning the backrests you go to 1.205.

Hyundai Bayon, engines

Only petrol and front-wheel drive, the Hyundai Bayon is available with an 84 hp 1.2 four-cylinder engine and a 100 or 120 C three-cylinder 1.0 turbo engine, which can also be combined with the robotised DCT gearbox with dual clutch and seven gears. The most powerful engine there is only in mild hybrid version with 48 volt technology, optional on the 100 hp variant. The latter with manual transmission takes 10.7 seconds to complete the 0-100 km / h, while for the variant with the automatic double clutch transmission it takes an extra second. The 120 hp, on the other hand, reaches 100 km / h from standstill in 10.4, regardless of the transmission, while the top speed of 185 km / h is the same for both engines. The manual gearbox is innovative: as on the i20, the clutch is operated not directly by the left pedal (which remains in any case) but by a motor with current. In release when you are at speed, the electronics can thus decide to open the clutch to eliminate the engine brake and let the car make better use of the momentum. In Italy, only the hybrid versions could arrive which, compared to the “normal” ones, lose 90 liters of trunk due to the size of the lithium-ion battery, which takes the place of the double bottom.

Hyundai Bayon, SICUREZZA

A well-developed front thanks to the SmartSense package: on all versions there is lane maintenance and automatic emergency braking which also detects pedestrians and cyclists. In addition there is also junction turning which, when turning left, prevents you from invading the opposite lane if another car is arriving. And there is also the Lane keeping assist, the automatic high beams and the Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance, which prevents collisions when maneuvering out of parking lots. All this is completed by the driver’s attention status monitoring system and by a particular sensor that warns of any movement on the rear seat when the car is parked, to protect children and animals inside. Prices have not yet been disclosed, but Bayon will rank below Kona, with a price list of around 19,000 euros. And it will arrive in Italian dealerships between June and July 2021.
