Ice hockey in the NHL: Draisaitl loses wild game with the Oilers

As of: February 22, 2024 7:56 a.m

Germany’s ice hockey star Leon Draisaitl lost a brilliant game against the Boston Bruins in the NHL with his Edmonton Oilers. Auston Matthews from the Toronto Maple Leafs scored his 50th goal of the season earlier than anyone else in a long time.

In the game in Edmonton, the winning goal came 6:5 for the guests on Wednesday (February 21, 2024) in overtime. Cologne’s Draisaitl (68 scorer points so far) didn’t score against the current top team in the East. Nevertheless, the Oilers are still on target in the fight for the playoffs as sixth in the Western Conference. The top eight qualify for the knockout rounds.

Peterka wins with the Sabres

The second German NHL crack in action was JJ Peterka. The runner-up world champion won 3-2 with the Buffalo Sabers against the Montreal Canadiens. However, the chances of making the playoffs are only theoretical; only three teams have a worse record in the Eastern Conference.

Matthews already has more than 50 goals

Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs scored his 50th goal of the season – in just 54 games. No ice hockey player in the National Hockey League has achieved this so quickly in 28 years. The striker scored 2-0 in a 5-3 win against the Arizona Cardinals and later made it 4-2 with his 51st goal of the season. The last person to reach 50 goals this season was Mario Lemieux, who only needed 50 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1995/1996. The fastest was Wayne Gretzky, who only needed 39 games with the Edmonton Oilers in 1981/1982 to reach 50 goals.

In the current season, Matthews is clearly the top scorer. Sam Reinhart of the Florida Panthers is ten goals behind. Leon Draisaitl is in 19th place on the top scorer list with 27 goals this season.
