SASSARI. After a year of stoppage due to the health emergency, tomorrow at the PalaSantoru in via Venezia, in Sassari, the international wrestling, Olympic and Roman tournament “Città di Sassari” returns, an event second only to the world championships in this discipline.
The event is organized by the Athlon Sassari sports club chaired by Vincenzo Piroddu, newly elected regional president of Fijlkam. The competition, now in its 26th edition this year, is attended by 73 athletes divided into three styles: male and female wrestling, Greco-Roman. «The complex covid procedures and the upcoming Olympics – says Vincenzo Piroddu – make this year’s City of Sassari very special for our organization. In addition to the Italian national team there will be the Russian freestyle and Greco-Roman national teams with their Olympic qualifiers ». Fifteen nations present at the tournament: Canada, Austria, Iraq, Angola, Official Center UWW Center Africa, Tunisia, Egypt, Portugal, Macedonia, Spain, Malta and Switzerland.
Many prestigious fighters who will perform tomorrow on the PalaSantoru mats. Among the Italians there will not be Simone Piroddu, born and raised in the Polisportiva Athlon Sassari, now part of the Army. The multiple Italian champion in various weight categories, and bronze medalist at the recent European championships held in Macedonia, will not be present because he will be involved next week in Dortmund, Germany, in the junior European championships.
There will be Willian Raffi, the Italian champion in the 92 kilos, Gavino Pazzona, silver in the tricolors in the 79 kilos, Davide Cossu, silver in the tricolors of the Shardana Nuoro, Fabio Morelli, bronze always at the nationals in the 125 kilos. And again: Sadulaev Abdulrashid (Russia), former world champion and Olympic champion in 97 kilos freestyle, Sidakov Zaurbek 2020 world champion in the 74 kilos freestyle category.
The knockout fights will take place tomorrow morning. After the break we will return to the mats for the semi-finals scheduled at 3 pm. At 4 pm the finals for the three steps of the podium will take place.
After the competition at PalaSantoru, the “Città di Sassari” caravan will move to Stintino on Sunday morning for the beach wrestling competition. This edition will see a change of scenery. Due to the restrictions on access to the Pelosa beach, provided for by the municipality of Stintino, the competition will in fact be transferred, in the same way, always to Stintino, on the beach of the Yacht Club “L’Ancora”. The race will take place from 10 to 14.
