Rome, May 12, 2021 – Jannik Sinner confronts Rafael Nadal on the Central Field of the Foro Italico in the second round of Internationals of Italy 2021. The blue tennis player gives it his all, plays two excellent sets but in the end he pays for the many mistakes in the service. The Spaniard made his debut as best he could, taking home the match in two sets for 7-6, 6-4.
Cousin set – Explosive start of Sinner, who breaks the break in the first game Nadal. Jannik immediately focused on his backhand, which he used to tackle the deadly forehand of the Spaniard. Rafa wastes no time and puts the game right with the counter-break. Rafa he grows up and after seven set points he manages to take home the first set for 7-6.
Second set – Sinner does not demoralize and returns to the attack, placing a break in the third game and winning the next serve for the 3-1. Both hold a very high level of tennis, missing a few shots and a few millimeters. Nadal takes advantage of a fogging game of Sinner to retrieve the break and go to 4-4. Sinner serves to keep the game alive, but the many mistakes in the first serve cost him sets and matches at the fourth match point. Nadal closes the game at 6-4 and flies to the second round.
