Francesco Cancellotti was born in Perugia on 27 February 1963. He grew up as a tennis player at the Perugia Tennis Club and in 1977, at just 14 years old, he was called up by Mario Belardinelli to the federal center in Formia. Between 1983 and 1988 he played 7 ATP finals with a balance of 2 tournaments won and 5 finals lost. On 15 May 1983 Cancellotti played the first final of his career in Florence, losing 64-63 to Jimmy Arias.

12 months passed and on 13 May 1984, again in Florence, he won his first title by beating Jimmy Brown 61 64 in the final. On 16 September of the same year he beat the future Olympic champion Miloslav Mecir in the final of the Palermo tournament. From that day on he played four more finals, losing them all: on 23 September 1984 he lost to Josè Higueras in Bordeaux by 67 75 63, on 12 April 1987 he lost to Claudio Pistolesi in the final in Bari, on 16 August 1986 he lost the final to Pedro Rebolledo in St Vincent and finally on 17 July 1988 he played the last final of his career in Bastad, losing 26 64 64 against Marcelo Filippini.
IThe ATP ranking reaches number 21 in the world, a position reached on 15 April 1985. In the Grand Slam tournaments he reached the round of 16 of Roland Garros twice in 1984 and 1985. In the Davis Cup he played a total of 11 matches, all in singles, finishing with a record of 5 matches won and 6 lost.
