Italian football manager Gennaro Gattuso has been sacked by Marseille

Italian football coach Gennaro Gattuso he was exonerated from Marseille, the French team he has coached since last September. The dismissal came at the height of a very negative period for Marseille, which is historically one of the strongest and most important teams in the French championship: since the beginning of 2024 it has won only one match, against an amateur team in the French Cup , and is ninth in the standings, 9 points away from third place which would qualify for the Champions League, the main European club cup, to which Marseille openly aspires.

Marseille already has announced also Gattuso’s replacement, the Frenchman Jean-Louis Gasset, who in the past has coached various French teams and recently the Ivory Coast national team (he had, however, been sacked in the first phase of the last African Cup of Nations, which he then won from the Ivory Coast).

On Sunday, Marseille lost their last league match away from home against Brest, despite having played with numerical superiority for over half an hour due to the sending off of an opposing player. After the match Gattuso was very critical of himself and the team, saying things like «we have to be honest: we don’t deserve this shirt», «we have reached rock bottom, we can’t go any lower», or «in football you need a soul and that’s what we’re missing.”

As a footballer, Gattuso played mainly for Milan, as a midfielder, winning a lot both nationally and internationally. With the Italian national team he was one of the most important players in the victory of the World Cup in 2006. As a coach however he has often coached teams in very complicated conditions and so far he has had little luck. In Italy he coached Milan and Napoli among others, but he also worked a lot abroad: last season he coached Valencia in Spain.
