CAGLIARI. “After all this effort, I would deserve to go back to Sardinia, but on vacation”. Diego Ulissi collects applause and compliments and finally lets himself go.

«I took the jersey already in Sassari at the first stage – says the UAE Emirates rider -, but clearly until you finish the job you can never relax. We worked a lot with the team, even in this last stage they had to make an extra effort because I punctured in the second part and they promptly made me rejoin the group. I really thank them ».

For Ulissi, who has put his disappointment behind him for not being part of the Tokyo group, it is time to enjoy the victory. «It is the second time that I run in Sardinia, the first time was in 2011 – he says -. It is a beautiful region and I like cycling here very much, I hope to go back especially for holidays … ».

Pascal Ackermann’s happiness, with his third success in four days, is irrepressible. «I was a bit of a bad mood for not going to the Tour de France – says the Bora rider Hansgrohe – but I continued to train hard and I came here with the idea of doing well. I arrived in good shape and after the first win I believed in it even more, with great support from the team. Three victories are a great thing, I’m really happy with how it went ».

How was this last stage? «For me very very hard – says Ackermann – because the climbs were demanding. We only lost about thirty seconds and so we were able to get back into the leading group for the sprint, always with a great deal of work on the part of my teammates to make the pace. In addition, my partner and my family were here waiting for me at the finish line and I was a bit tense because of this, I really wanted to win. It was hot and windy again, but it went as best it could not ».
