Jonathan Rodríguez does not travel with América; he is one step away from the MLS

Uruguayan forward Jonathan “Cabecita” Rodríguez is set to miss América’s upcoming match against Atlas as he is on the verge of finalizing a move to the MLS. The striker has received a compelling offer from the Portland Timbers, prompting his decision to pursue the opportunity due to his dissatisfaction with his substitute role under coach André Jardine. While the transfer is not yet official, all indicators point towards its completion, with Rodríguez being asked to finalize personal details before departing for the United States.

The only remaining hurdle for the transfer is the payment to América, but it is expected to be resolved imminently. At 30 years old, Rodríguez sees this move as a chance to secure a significant salary that will benefit him in retirement, as he will be designated as one of Portland’s three franchise players, entitling him to a salary above the league’s limit.

Jardine had hoped for Rodríguez’s continued presence in the team, acknowledging his value in changing matches despite his concerns. The coach expressed his understanding of the player’s dilemma, stating, “I spoke with him, he likes the idea of being here, different from what I read out there, he is very happy, he has an atmosphere where everyone loves him, but a lot of things happen in his head, he is a 30-year-old player, if he gets an important offer, well, it is three parts, it is not easy, this is what we work for.”
