Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool FC celebrate their 3-0 win over Southampton in the FA Cup

Football coach Jürgen Klopp can continue to hope for the next of four possible titles in his final season with Liverpool FC. Three days after winning the League Cup, the leaders of the English Premier League reached the quarter-finals of the prestigious FA Cup. The Reds won 3-0 (1-0) against second division club Southampton FC in their round of 16 at Anfield Road on Wednesday evening. “Klopp’s kids are going crazy,” was the headline of the British association over the video of the game.

As in the League Cup, Klopp, whose team has been complaining about bad luck with injuries for weeks, sent a young team onto the field. And so it was 18-year-old striker Lewis Koumas who scored on his professional debut in the 44th minute to give the hosts the lead. “We scored a wonderful goal,” said Klopp, who spoke of an “intense” game against a “top team”. “We had to find a way, and we did that.” Klopp said he particularly enjoyed the second half.

Klopp: “We deserve to progress”

An 18-year-old also scored the other two goals for Liverpool: Jayden Danns, who came on for Koumas in the 63rd minute (73rd/88th minute), ensured the final score with his goals. It was the young player’s first goals with the professionals. Klopp praised Koumas and Danns after the game, saying that they were both very advanced in terms of finishing, but that they still had to “learn and improve”. In the League Cup, veteran Virgil van Dijk scored the decisive goal, but the collective performance of the young and inexperienced Liverpool team still caused enthusiasm.

The current situation is fundamentally “terribly difficult,” said Klopp, referring to the personnel situation after the game. But he and his team accepted this, everyone tried to “find solutions”. The mood in the locker room and in the training room is still positive. “It’s great to be in the quarter-finals and we’re not taking it for granted. We deserved to progress, it was a top performance, a top performance.”

Chelsea FC, who were still behind in the cup against Liverpool, won 3-2 (2-1) at home against Leeds United from the Championship. But the favorite had to tremble, Conor Gallagher only scored the winning goal in the 90th minute.
