Killed at the ATM in front of his wife in Lequile, the alleged killer arrested

by admin

Lecce, July 17, 2021 – It is a 31-year-old Albanian the man accused of having cold with two gunshots to the chest the former bank manager Giovanni Caramuscio, 69 years old, long retired, little before he took the cash from the ATM. Paulin Mecaj, this is the name of the alleged murderer, lives a few steps from the Banco di Napoli branch in via San Pietro in Lama in Lequile (Lecce) where Caramuscio stops, around 11pm on Friday, with his wife to withdraw money after having been to a party at his nephew’s house before returning to Monteroni where he resides. As he is about to introduce the card, the former bank official sees a bush peeking out from behind two people, armed with guns, the face distorted by a sort of rudimentary mask made from some old trousers.

When the two instruct him to withdraw the cash and deliver it without making a fuss, Giovanni reacts, throwing a punch to one of his attackers. And in this way he signs his death sentence. The hit robber falls to the ground, the other starts firing like a madman, three shots, two of which reach the pensioner in the chest. Then they disappear on foot without taking the loot, but taking away only the wallet abandoned, however, a few hundred meters from the ATM. For Giovanni there is nothing to do: when the 118 ambulance arrives, called by his terrified wife, he is already dead. A bloody sequence that does not escape three cameras in the area that film the decisive moments of the attack.

Not only. A witness he tells of having noticed a man (probably one of the perpetrators of the robbery) heading, shortly after midnight, towards a nearby well with a plastic bag in his hand and having seen him again, shortly after, returning empty-handed. Searching the cavity, the divers of the firefighters found clothing that was found to be those used in the course of the robbery by comparing it with the images of the video surveillance systems acquired on the spot. And the well is located less than a hundred meters from the house of Mecaj who must answer, in competition with another subject in the process of being identified, for the murder of Caramuscio. The man is subjected to the arrest of a suspect issued by the Public Prosecutor of Lecce, signed by the magistrate Alberto Santacatterina.

Inside her home, she is found, hidden inside an ornamental plant, a pistol with abraded serial number which could be the weapon with which the pensioner who leaves his wife and three children was brutally killed. And then a T-shirt, the same one shot by the cameras, from which the printed logo had been cut in an attempt to avoid identification. A tragedy that leaves two communities in Salento astonished, that of Lequile and that of Monteroni. Those who knew him well, like las mayor of Monteroni Mariolina Pizzuto, speaks of Caramuscio as an irreproachable and always available person. “An immense pain – he says – I hope that for the killers there is the maximum punishment”. The first citizen of Lequile, Vincenzo Carlà, remains in place all night and announces the proclamation of city mourning.
