According to the original plan of the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF), the 9th East Asian Cup in 2022 will be held in China from July 19 to 27 for a period of 8 days. However, due to the current severe epidemic prevention situation in China, the event is likely to be changed from China to Japan.
The East Asian Cup tournament started in 2003. It was not called the East Asian Football Championship until 2010. The competition has been renamed the EAFF East Asia Cup since 2013, and the EAFF E-1 Championship has been used since 2017.
The three East Asian countries, South Korea, China and Japan, are regular entrants in this competition, while Hong Kong and North Korea will fill the remaining seats through qualifiers. South Korea has won five consecutive championships in 2008, 2015, 2017 and 2019, starting with its inaugural championship in 2003.
The East Asia Cup is not a competition organized by FIFA. Therefore, there is no mandatory requirement to recruit foreign players. This is why Sun Xingmin and Huang Xican have not participated in this competition so far. Players from the K League and J League are in the competition with Japan and China.
