On Thursday the French footballer Kylian Mbappé informed the management of his team, Paris Saint-Germain, that he will leave at the end of the season, when his contract expires: the specialized website reported it first The AthleticThat he mentioned sources “close to the matter”, but the news came later confirmed also from Fabrizio Romano, a journalist who is usually very informed on these issues, and from various French and international newspapers. For now, however, there are no official announcements: The Athletic writes that the team and the player have yet to agree on how the separation will occur. According to Romano, the team and the player will communicate the decision together in the coming months.

Mbappé is 25 years old, he is a striker and is considered one of the best players in the world. In his professional career so far he has only played for two French teams, Monaco from 2015 to 2017 and then Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). With the two club teams he won 6 French championships, five of which with Paris Saint-Germain, but he has never managed to win international trophies, above all the Champions League, the most important at European level (he reached the final in 2020 , but lost against the Germans Bayern Munich).

In 2017 he became the youngest candidate for the Ballon d’Or, the highest individual award for a footballer, but he never managed to win it and never went beyond third place, achieved last year: his decision may have had the greater ambitions at individual and club level have a significant impact on the results obtained so far.

With France, however, he won the World Cup in 2018 and reached the final in the 2022 World Cup, proving decisive in both for his national team and one of the best players in the competition. There has been talk for some time about the possibility of him changing teams, especially due to Real Madrid’s strong interest in him, one of the most prestigious and successful Spanish teams ever who has already tried to sign him several times.

Two years ago his possible transfer became a national case: Mbappé tale who was even called by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, to convince him not to go to Real Madrid. Macron told him that it was very important for France that the best French footballer around remained to play in the country (and in the best team in the country). Mbappé was convinced to stay and his already very high salary was revised upwards.

In May 2022 he signed a two-year contract, with the possibility of renewal for a third, which included upward clauses for each year he remained: 70 million euros for the first, 80 for the second and 90 for the third, which at this point There will not be. Furthermore, PSG had guaranteed him another 180 million euros “upon signing” as a bonus, a sort of thank you for choosing to stay. His contract is one of the richest contracts ever for a sportsman and it is estimated that it currently costs PSG around 200 million euros per season.

After signing that contract Mbappé showed up at the press conference with a t-shirt that said “2025”, a signal that symbolically showed his intention to activate the option for the third year at the end of the first two: now he has instead decided not to to do it.
