Disaster for Liam Everts. The Lummen native (19) fell during training in Grevenbroich on Wednesday and suffered a fracture in his thumb. He underwent surgery on Thursday and will certainly miss the start of the World Cup – on March 10 in Argentina.

Everts impressed last season in the MX2 World Championship. The Red Bull KTM rider won three Grand Prix and finished fourth in the World Championship in his first year as a factory rider. Performance that he wanted to at least equal in 2024.

In recent weeks, Everts immediately showed great things in the preparation races (win in Mantova and a second place in Sommières). But on Wednesday things went wrong during training in Grevenboirch, Germany. Everts made an apparently innocent fall, but afterwards complained of pain in his right thumb. After examination in the Herentals hospital on Thursday morning, his thumb turned out to be broken. In the afternoon Liam already went under the knife. “His preparation had gone very well so far. Liam had clearly taken steps again, both physically and mentally,” says dad Stefan Everts. “He was able to work perfectly for three months, but two weeks before the start of the World Cup he experienced this… (sigh) I feel so sorry for Liam.”

Liam will be out of action for at least four weeks. He can certainly remember the opening match of the World Cup – on March 10 in Vila la Angostura, Argentina. “This is a setback, but we shouldn’t make a drama out of it,” says Stefan. “This is not a serious injury. It just comes at a very inconvenient time, so close to the start of the World Cup. Liam will miss at least one Grand Prix. That is a maximum of 50 points that he cannot achieve. So nothing has been lost yet, although it does of course make the assignment more difficult.”

Everts is now aiming for the second Grand Prix, in Arroyomolinos, Spain, on March 24. Although that will also be a race against time. Stefan Everts: “It has been shown in the past that Liam recovers faster from injuries. With any luck he can get back on the bike a week before the Spanish GP.”
