Stijn Desmet comes after penalty and does not fall in the final tournament

Stijn Desmet was unable to qualify for the semi-finals of the 1,500 meters and the quarter-finals of the 500 meters during the short track world championships in Rotterdam on Saturday. Desmet always failed in the last repechage round.

On the longest distance, the best Belgian short tracker started an advance from the tail of the peloton five laps before the end of the race, hindering the Japanese Kosei Hayashi. The jury was irrevocable: penalty. Only the winner, the Frenchman Félix Pigeon, is allowed to skate further.

Due to a bad first day, Desmet was referred to the retakes at two distances. That meant he had to get up before dawn, because the first session – almost without spectators – started at a quarter to nine.

If he were to skate both distances, the 500 and 1,500 meters, he would already have had four starts before the final program starts at half past two. After his elimination in the 1500 meters, Desmet decided to start in the 500 meters in consultation with national coach Ingmar van Riel. On that part he crashed, riding in third position, at the end of the penultimate corner. The Dutchman Jens van’t Wout qualified.

Tineke den Dulk (500 and 1,500m), Ward Pétré and Enzo Proost (both 1,500m), like Desmet, did not qualify for the main tournament. Desmet will only skate the semi-final of the relay with the men’s team on Saturday. The opponents there are the Netherlands, Poland and Kazakhstan.
