The champion from Pavia, paired with Di Liberto from Palermo, won the title in the K2 200 meters and then finished fifth in the K1 final.

PAVIA. It was a triumphal weekend for Manfredi Rizza who in Poznan, Poland, became the absolute European champion in the K2 200 meters specialty, together with Andrea Di Liberto from Palermo. After having challenged each other throughout the first part of the season competing for the pass for the Tokyo Olympic Games, the two Azzurri finally joined forces giving Italy an absolute continental title that had been missing since 2001 with the victory of the “legend” Josefa Idem a Milan.

Having gained access to the final directly from the heats, in the race for medals the Italian K2 put its full potential into the water, conquering the top step of the podium with a time of 33,095 ”. The other crews are clearly behind with Lithuania (33.355 seconds) silver medal and Russia (33.653 seconds) in third place. The Pavese canoe thus returned to celebrate a European title 24 years after the exploit of Luca Negri who in Bulgaria became European champion both in K2 1000 meters, with Antonio Rossi, and in K2 500 meters, paired with Beniamino Bonomi.

Returning to Poznan, after the title in K2, Rizza also took part in the race in K1, finishing the continental review in fifth place, just over two tenths from the podium where the gold went to the Hungarian Totka, ahead of the British Heath and to the Swedish Menning.

An important result in view of Tokyo, the next highly anticipated appointment for the Italian Air Force rider from Pavia, who will be at the start of the K1 200 in Japan: the races will begin on August 4 with the batteries; the 5th will be the very final. For Rizza it will be the second participation in the Games, after the adventure in 2016 in Rio which ended with sixth place.

Mathilde Rosa’s European Championship ran aground in the semifinal but failed to gain access to the finals of the K2 200 meters and K2 500 meters where she was engaged with Irene Bellan. In the final test of K1 5000 the Cus champion then snatched a tenth place.

While the senior national team was engaged in Poland, the selection tests for the youth teams were staged in Castel Gandolfo. Shining was the star of Matteo Bazzano (Canottieri Ticino) who with the victory in the K1 200 meters (third consecutive) awaits the call of the junior national team for the European category. The under 23 of Cus, Elena Ricchiero, bronze on 200 and 500 meters, also trusts in the blue call. In the Girls category, great performance by Rebecca Barbieri, first on 1000 meters and third on both 200 and 500 meters. –
