Milan: Average goals, saves and … assists: this is how Maignan canceled Gigio

In a few months the Frenchman replaced Donnarumma in the hearts of the fans also thanks to a better performance, exceeding the numbers recorded last season by the former Rossonero

“Magic Mike” and the fear passes. Pioli applauds from the bench, Maldini and Massara exchange satisfied glances and the fans cheer. Maignan’s performance hasn’t been in the news since last year: champion of France with Lille with 21 clean sheets, most of all, even Gigio, who held the Rossoneri’s gate high 14 times before winning the European Championship. Maignan arrived silently to replace him and it wasn’t easy. In the press room, however, he immediately set the record straight: “I didn’t come to replace Donnarumma, but to do my job”. So far he has never betrayed, so much so that the fans have already fallen in love with him.

Numbers

In the end he really did better than Gigio. Word to the numbers: beyond the assist to Leao against Sampdoria, a perfect postponement with his feet, in the first 25 days of this year he managed to “beat” what Donnarumma did in the last six seasons, if we take into consideration the same time period. The French goalkeeper has an enviable average of goals conceded: 0.84. Last year Gigio closed at 1.12. If we talk about goals collected instead – always compared to the first 25 days of the last two championships – Maignan again overcomes Gigio: 19 games and 16 goals conceded for the Frenchman (stopped due to a wrist injury several days), 24 games and 27 goals cashed for Gigio. Also higher than the average / saves per game: 76.1% (51) against 71.3% (69). Only the clean sheets are the same: 8 each.

Comparison

Now a comparison on the current season. Two premises: the first is that Maignan missed nine games due to injury, out from mid-October to the end of November. The second is that Gigio lives with the shadow of Keylor Navas, three-time European champion with Real. A dualism that does not appeal to both, only to Pochettino: “I will continue to alternate them”. This is another story. So let’s start with the blue: so far he has played 16 games – 10 in Ligue 1, 4 in the Champions League and 2 in the French Cup – collecting 10 goals. Eight clean sheets on the scoresheet, two of level: City and Real in the big cup. He churned out 47 saves with a percentage of 82.5%. Very high. After all we are talking about one of the strongest goalkeepers in Europe, 22 years old, destined for the ownership of the PSG (Navas is 35 years old). And Maignan? Nine clean sheets of the season, including 8 in Serie A. Only Ospina (11), Szczesny (10), Handanovic (10) and Rui Patricio (9) did better, but Mike played a few fewer games. The percentage of saves is 74.2% (69 interventions). In short, good numbers also from him, now leader of Pioli and Rossoneri gold. Magic Mike.
