Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics, for the GDP benefit of three billion

The 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games will have an impact on GDP of three billion dollars, with an expected investment of around one billion. In summary, this is the estimate that emerges from the research carried out for the Leonardo Committee by Luiss Guido Carli on Sport and Business and edited by the Vice Rector for Research, Stefano Manzocchi.

The analysis was presented on May 26 at Coni during the 2022 edition of the Forum of the Leonardo Committee chaired by Luisa Todini, which annually brings together representatives of the institutions and the business community to take stock of the development prospects for Made in Italy. This year the appointment, organized in collaboration with Ice Agenzia, Confindustria and Coni, is precisely focused on the drive for recovery that the sports industry can ensure, after the pandemic, both thanks to the availability of new financial resources with the Pnrr, and thanks to the great events expected in the Peninsula, starting with the Milan-Cortina Olympics.

According to the research, the 2026 Winter Games will produce more in detail an increase in resources within the sports sector equal to 1,142 million euros, while the sectors will benefit from greater resources for 1,026 million. In other words, an increase in demand of one billion in the sports sector will generate a direct, indirect and induced impact on the Italian economy of 2,901 million.

They fly for employment

The organization of the Winter Olympics will also be a driving force for employment, resulting in an increase in demand and therefore in production for the suppliers of the sports sector. Up to 13 thousand new work units could be created, of which 9,173 within the sports sector and 3,772 in the main economic sectors connected in particular in services.

The increase in added value and employment will be matched by an increase in the level of income estimated at approximately 320 million euros, of which 225 million directly within the sports sector.
