The 2nd consecutive appointment valid for the Motocross World Championship takes place on 8 September. Here’s how to follow the race

For the first time this year the Motocross World Championship will be staged on Wednesday. On 8 September Afyonkarahisar will host the second consecutive round on Turkish soil. Land of Jeffrey Herlings, who on this track did nothing but win: after the success of 2019, he repeated on Sunday with a 1st and a 2nd place in the heats.

The Dutchman is the obligatory favorite in view of the ninth round of the season but he is the rear of the group of riders who can really aim for the world championship: 5th in the standings, he is 36 points behind the leader Tim Gajser (Honda), which will have to be more constant than seen on Sunday. The Slovenian has 13 points ahead of Jorge Prado (Ktm) and the Spaniard is clearly growing, as evidenced by the two second places obtained in the last two rounds. Less constant but still at the top of the ranking is Romain Febvre (Kawasaki), who is 17 points behind Gajser.

tony against bad luck

A separate chapter for Tony Cairoli (Ktm) who took two fifth places on Sunday, but what happened in race 2 can only make him complain: while he was fighting with Prado for the second position, he hit a bale of hay, which ended up in the middle at the track after an off-track by another driver. The podium of the day was within his reach, but instead he had to settle for the top 5. The nine-time World Champion is in good shape but has a gap of 26 points from the top of the standings. Closing the first half of the season with a minor delay would be an excellent signal for the next appointments.
