Nespoli, the dean: “I’m in Tokyo just to do well”

In the team event a gold and a silver in Beijing and London

PAVIA. The archer Nespoli was one of the first to arrive. The Vogherese today will be engaged in the 62 arrows that will determine the positions of both the individual and mixed team rankings.

In 2008 at the Olympic Games in Beijing he won silver in the team event and four years later – in the same test – at the London Olympic Games he climbed the top step of the podium with Michele Frangilli and Marco Galiazzo. In Rio he finished sixth. We interview him on the eve of the Olympic test.

How did the Tokyo competition field go?

«The qualifying field is identical to two years ago, while the field of the finals is decidedly more complete: the stands have been assembled, there is a colored synthetic grass background. Overall it is much more colorful and much more olimpico, although there will be no audience. I must say it was nice to pull us. The biggest difference compared to the pre-Olympic is the weather: in 2019 it was raining and cold, now it is much warmer especially on the synthetic field. It will affect our performance ».

You are in the fourth Olympics. How important is experience?

«Certainly having already had the opportunity to try, fall and make mistakes in previous editions puts me in an advantageous position, because it gives me the greatest ease of recognizing what Olympic pitfalls may be. At the same time it must be said that the Olympics is a special match in its own right ».

You will compete both in the mixed team and in the individual representing the male arc. Do you feel more empowered?

«I don’t feel more pressure, I will do neither more nor less what I always do when I go out on the pitch: I have to perform to the best of my ability, in any competition or circumstance».

Who will be the most dangerous opponents?

«Everyone and nobody: we know what the strength of the Koreans and the US is, but we are at the Olympics, there are no buffer athletes, they are all here to obtain an important result. And if the same question were asked to my opponents, I’m sure they would put myself on the list of the most dangerous ones. I have what it takes to play with anyone and to be able to beat me they will have to make one point more than me: I will sell my life dearly ».

How do you feel a few hours from the start of the races?

«I’m very excited: this edition of the Games arrives a year late, I want to do well. For now I have not yet hit a podium and this charges me and gives me even more desire to reverse this trend of 2021 which at the moment is without medals ».

How are you experiencing this particular situation linked to Covid-19?

«They are limitations that I would gladly do without. I’m avoiding the common areas, in fact I don’t go to the gym but I do exercises in the room, we do the tampon every day. I am very careful, also because this year I have already missed an international competition due to a positive covid, so I would like to avoid repeating the experience ».

Unlike the other editions of the Games, there will be no public: can it have a weight?

«We are not used to shooting with the public in normal archery competitions, so it makes little difference. Knowing that not only fans follow us on television but potentially the whole world makes the Olympics worthy of the name ».

What message do you want to send to the DLF Voghera Archers and the Pavia archers?

“Cheer for me and the girls! Follow the archery competitions ».maurizio scorbati
