New York, January 9, 2022 – There is a massacre in a skyscraper in New York, hit in the afternoon by a fire. According to the first balance there are at least 19 dead, of which 9 children. The injured are 63, more than thirty are hospitalized. The flames broke out on the second and third floors of a 19-story building: an old construction found in Bronx, at 333 East of the 181st Street.
The stake broke out around 11 in an apartment, and then spread to the entire residential complex called Twin Park, inhabited by many families. Most of the tenants were at home at that time, which is normal on a Sunday morning in winter. The victims have been found everywhere, on every floor of the building, on the landings, on the stairs, burned alive while trying to escape or die from lack of oxygen, in cardiac arrest. A horrible scene for the rescuers, employed in 200 in the extinguishing and rescue operations.
“It is one of the worst fires in the recent history of the city,” says the head of the gods fire fighters from New York. “This is terrible, this is terrible, this is a painful time for the city,” comments the sindaco Eric Adams, rushed to the scene, struggling with the first dramatic event of his administration.
There is a precedent in the Bronx and it is thefire from 1990 toHappy Land, a night club in which 87 people lost their lives, in which, it turned out later, no safety rules had been respected.
All still to be clarified the causes of today’s fire: the security and fire-fighting systems are already being examined by the investigators. For the head of the brigade it is an “unusual fire”, at least for the way it spread, rapidly, to all floors of the building. Surely this was “helped by the fact that the apartment he burst into had the door open”.
