On January 29, Beijing time, the Oceania Football Federation officially confirmed that Tonga, which was hit hard by the volcanic eruption, officially withdrew from the 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifiers.
On January 15, a massive volcanic eruption and tsunami devastated much of Tonga, severely affecting the lives of more than 80% of the population. According to the original plan, Tonga will compete in the qualifying rounds of the World Preliminaries on March 13 and compete with the Cook Islands for a place in the Oceania World Preliminaries. After Tonga exits, the Cook Islands will automatically enter Group A, with rivals Solomon Islands, Tahiti and Vanuatu.
