London, 6 June 2022 – Boris Johson gets the trust: 211 votes in favor, 148 against. The British premier he snatched the renewal in the secret ballot consultation on his leadership within the Conservative Party (on which the chair of British prime minister depends) triggered by the revolt of a part of the majority group following the scandal Partygate.

The result, announced by the president of the 1922 Committee, the internal body in charge of overseeing the showdown in the Tory house, sanctioned 211 votes in favor of BoJo, but 148 against: a rift that it weakens it and it may not be enough to secure it in the near future.

But BoJo looks to the future. “What we want to do is use this moment, which I think is decisive and conclusive, for to move on with our agenda ”., he declared showing that he had no concern for the Toria MPs who voted against him. Indeed emphasizing that “The opportunity to be united, keep our promises and strengthen our economy ”. Confirming confidence means for Johnson that the Partygate page can be closed to focus “on what we need to do to help people with the cost of living, to keep streets and communities safer.”

The Partygate

180 votes were needed to overcome the action promoted by 54 Conservative deputies that they had subscribed to a letter in which they asked for the resignation of
Johnson after Partygate scandals, Downing Street parties during the lockdown.

BoJo’s appeal

In his appeal, in a closed door speech, to the Tories shortly before the vote on the motion began, Johnson promised: “I will lead you to victory again.” The premier received the support of the 58,8% of the Conservative party, while 41.2% voted against. All Conservative MPs cast their votes. This is a result below the 63% obtained from the former premier Theresa May in 2018.

Waiting for the verdict

British MPs are left waiting outside the hall of Parliament where they were called to vote on the future of the Conservative party leader. Among the politicians lined up – voting began at 6pm UK time (7pm in Italy) – Foreign Office Secretary Liz Truss, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, and Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries. In 141 they had announced their public support for Boris Johnson.

The pound

British pound little move after the prime minister’s vote of confidence. The British pound is trading at 1.2531 dollars in the evening, having fallen below the 1.25 level during the session. The pound remains far from the highs above $ 1.40 marked last year.
