Positive for ten days, the Olympian Chiara Cainero is fighting against the virus: “The medal in Tokyo to chase everything away”

by admin

The 43-year-old athlete from Cavalicco is trying to overcome a tough obstacle four months after his fifth Olympics “I struggle to climb a flight of stairs, in the meantime I think about resting and then going back to shooting better than before”

UDINE. In Tokyo stronger than before. Struggled by Covid, which tested positive about ten days ago, Chiara Cainero has started the countdown to the Olympics. Despite being tremendously tired and fatigued at the moment, the shooter from Cavalicco can’t wait to get back to training to get prepared for her fifth five-circle skeet review. But first he has to recover his energy, and right now it doesn’t seem that easy.

«Even climbing a flight of stairs puts me in great difficulty – explains the Carabinieri athlete -. Recovering will not be a walk in the park ».

But all in all, it was better now than on the eve of his departure for Japan. The Tokyo Olympics were supposed to be a celebration for the whole family. Chiara, 43, a few days ago, had imagined bringing Edoardo, her eldest son and her number one fan, to Japan. Instead, the one that will start next July 23 will be an armored Olympics, with very strict protocols and little conviviality, and the road to get there is still full of uncertainties. We interviewed her two days ago, competing with Agata and Edo, between a remote lesson and the preparation of lunch.

First, how do you feel?

“I’m so tired. The first thing I really feel like saying is that this is by no means a trivial flu. I’ve been pretty bad and it’s really hard to recover. Fortunately, I have always been treated at home, but I have had a high fever, very severe pain and cough. My husband Filippo is also positive and he too was bad like me. My daughter Agata was the first to test positive, but she had few complaints. Edoardo, the eldest, has always been well. The biggest relief is that my parents did not contract the virus: the few times I left the children with my parents, they always wore a mask and I hope this protected them. Soon both will be vaccinated and this reassures me a lot ».

Are you already planning your recovery?

“I’m actually trying to rest as much as possible right now, but it’s not that simple. The two children are home from school and kindergarten; Edoardo has to follow the lessons at a distance. Children rightly require a lot of attention and don’t leave much free time. I know it will be very tiring to start over: at this moment I am also struggling to climb the stairs, so I can’t imagine myself on the platform yet ».

Do you think about the Olympics? “Of course yes! I know I’ll come back stronger than before. However, there is a lot of uncertainty on the race calendar for the coming months. At the moment, in India, the weapons that had not yet obtained the Olympic qualification are on the platform in the World Cup. For skeet there would be some important races between the end of April and May, but the calendar is constantly changing, with appointments postponed or canceled. The road to Tokyo is full of question marks ».

Do you have contacts with your sports group or with the federation?

“Almost daily. The Carabinieri have always made me feel their great support and also the Federation. We haven’t talked about recovery yet: the recommendation is to rest. Before I can start again, I will still have to undergo the sport fitness examination again, a protocol provided for those who contract the virus ».

Have you ever felt alone in this period?

“Absolutely not. In addition to the support of the Carabinieri and Fitav, I have to wholeheartedly thank the community of Tavagnacco, in particular the Civil Protection and my general practitioner, who still contact me daily to verify my conditions or to support me in the needs we cannot provide. alone”.

What do you feel like saying to those who are still skeptical about the danger of the virus?

«Not to take it lightly and not to underestimate it. For me it was really hard and I hope to be able to recover soon. I would like to recommend the utmost attention and always use all the precautions that are recommended to us. Once healed, I will continue to be very careful, to keep my distance, to wear the mask, limiting contact as much as possible. I invite everyone to get vaccinated, because I believe it is a very important protection ».
