Rafael Devers, the third baseman for the Boston Red Sox, has made it clear that he feels the franchise should have done more to improve the roster over the winter. As the Red Sox show signs of improvement early in spring training, Devers expressed his belief that the front office should have made the necessary adjustments to put the team in a better position to win.

Speaking through an interpreter, Devers stated, “They need to make an adjustment to help us players be in a better position to win. Everyone in this organization wants to win. We (as players) want to win. I think they need to make an adjustment to help us win. I’m not saying the team is not good at the moment, but they need to be aware of what (the weaknesses) are and what we need.”

Devers, who finalized a 10-year contract with the Red Sox in January 2023 worth $313.5 million, had an impressive season last year, hitting .271 with 33 home runs and 100 RBIs in 153 games. However, the Red Sox finished last in the American League East with a 78-84 record.

The Red Sox made minimal moves over the winter, signing right-hander Lucas Giolito to a two-year, $38.5 million contract and acquiring outfielder Tyler O’Neill and infielder Vaughn Grissom in trades. However, they also sent outfielder Alex Verdugo to the New York Yankees and released left-hander Chris Sale in a deal with Atlanta that brought Grissom.

Despite ranking sixth in the majors last year with a .258 batting average and boasting a .748 OPS that ranked ninth, the team struggled with a collective ERA of 4.52, ranking 21st in the league.

Devers emphasized, “Everyone knows what we need. You know what we need and they know what we need. It’s just that there are some things I can’t say out loud. But everyone who knows the organization and knows the game knows what we need.”

As the team prepares for the upcoming season, Devers’ comments have sparked discussions about the Red Sox’s offseason decisions and the potential impact on their performance. It remains to be seen how the franchise will respond to Devers’ call for roster improvements as they strive to return to a winning position.
