Manchester United’s interim manager Rangnick appears to be more willing to take up his advisory role now than to remain in charge until the end of the season. Speaking to the media, he laid out a package outlining his macro vision in four steps and finally confirmed that the Red Devils would need at least three more transfer windows to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool.
The 63-year-old German clearly proposed a “four-step” plan:
1. Appoint a new head coach
2. Sign players who fit the new coach’s philosophy
3. Select players with a certain aggressiveness and physicality in the recruitment process after fully recognizing that Manchester United is “too soft”
4. Take a patient transfer approach and try to catch up to rivals after three transfer windows
The starting point of all new plans for Manchester United is the “appointment of a new manager”, with current Ajax boss Ten Hag and Paris Saint-Germain boss Pochettino being the standouts. Among them, Ten Hag is Rangnick’s favorite candidate. According to media reports and analysis, if Manchester United wanted to invite, the Dutchman had already verbally agreed to leave Jia’s house.
As for the next few steps of the plan, how to catch up with Manchester City and Liverpool, Rangnick said: “Manchester City and Liverpool were built and recruited in five or six years, all based on Guardiola and Klopp. It depends on what kind of football you want to play.”
“I’ve advised the board and it’s something that Manchester United have to go through as well. Whenever, no matter who, our new manager will be very clear, what kind of football does he want to play? What kind of players do we need to do it? His goal?”
“Then let’s go back to the DNA of the players, speed, fitness, rhythm. What do we need? This team has no shortage of technical players, it needs more physicality.”
“It takes a right decision, a clear direction, what kind of manager do we want, what kind of player do we want, and then, every transfer window, do the best we can. It’s science, And we have to do it. If that’s the case, it doesn’t necessarily take three or four years, maybe after two or three transfer windows, it will be different.”
