Riyadh, day 4: the wonderful adventure of Nachi Sager and Salvador Oria

The fairy tale of Riyadh Season P1 is that of Nachi Sager and Salvador Oria. Starting from the qualifiers, the two Spaniards – number 54 and number 106 respectively in the FIP ranking – will play tomorrow for a place in the final of the men’s draw against world number 1 Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia, who today beat Arroyo/Alonso 6-3 6-4 (14). If in the second round Sager and Oria had already eliminated Diestro/Leal (15) in three sets, in the round of 16 they were able to do even better against Alex Ruiz and Juan Tello (7), again in three sets.

Instead, only two were enough (doubles 6-4) in the quarterfinals against Javi Rico and Juanlu Esbri, who also reached the top eight of the tournament against all odds after eliminating Navarro/Gutierrez. Sager had already achieved great results recently, such as victory in the 2022 CUPRA FIP Finals; a few months ago, however, he had come close to achieving the feat in the quarterfinals of the FIP Platinum Sardinia, where he had lost in three sets to Sanchez / Capra. The other semi-final, the one at the top of the scoreboard, will instead see Juan Lebron and Ale Galan (6-1 6-2 to Campagnolo/Gutierrez) and the ‘Superpibes’ Franco Stupaczuk and Martin Di Nenno (6-2 6-1 on Yanguas/Garrido). It will be the first time that the four will meet on the pitch after the epic Milan P1 final, won by Lebron/Galan after almost three hours of battle.

In the semifinals, in women’s draw, there are three of the top four seeds. The only couple capable of overcoming one higher up on the entry list was the one formed by Jessica Castelló and Claudia Jensen (6), who eliminated Marta Ortega and Gemma Triay (3). It was the last match together of the couple who first put their name on the roll of honor of a women’s Premier Padel tournament, in July at the Foro Italico in Rome.

From Doha – where the qualifiers will begin tomorrow -, Ortega and Triay will play with Veronica Virseda and Claudia Fernandez respectively. Castelló/Jensen will face Delfina Brea and Bea Gonzalez, who beat Navarro/Guinart 6-1 6-2. The other semi-final will face the number 1 seeds, Ari Sanchez and Paula Josemaria, thanks to the 6-3 6-2 over Osoro/Virseda, and 4, with Alejandra Salazar and Tamara Icardo who left only four games (6 -1 6-3) in Riera-Araujo.
