Roberto Mastrotto, face to face with the ultratrailer (winning) by chance

Beautiful victories and even bigger goals. The Vicenza champion reveals the routes he loves most in “his” Little Dolomites

Winner of the very recent 170 kilometers of the Adamello Ultra Trail, Roberto Mastrotto begins his ascent on the top positions of the Ultra Trail almost by chance. “It was 2015 and I wanted to get back in shape after a sporting break. From here I approached the mountains and trail running, not only a way to train but also to see new and beautiful places. My first mountain race it was the 60 km of the Durona Trail, a home competition, organized by the team I belong to. Since then, running has been part of my life ”. Roberto lives in the mountains of the Vicenza area in the upper Chiampo valley. Athlete of Team La Sportiva and Polar ambassador, in running he not only sees the competitive aspect but also an outlet in everyday life. And given the results, it seems to work.

Next big goal?

I have an unfinished business with the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc. This year I had to retire due to stomach problems that made me waste too much time. I want to improve my performance in the 2018 edition and I will do my best “.

Which trails in the small Vicenza Dolomites do you recommend to those coming from afar?

“It may seem trivial but I certainly suggest the path of the first thing 52 Pasubio tunnels. It is a spectacular route, rich in history that reaches the Papa Refuge in about 3 and a half hours of walking with an altitude difference of 800 meters. I also like it very much because it passes there “Trans D’Havet” a competition that I have in my heart, a home race that takes place in July. Then I see the outline of those mountains every day from the window of my house and every time it fascinates me. To those looking for challenges, I remind you that the path of the 52 tunnels is part of the “Little Dolomites under the hour” project which requires you to complete four routes in the area in less than an hour ”.

That armchair on the summit of Carega

“Another tour of the house that I really like is the one that goes from the Bertagnoli Refuge to Cima Carega and the Fraccaroli Refuge, just below the summit. They are about 10 kilometers for one way only with 1,200 meters of elevation gain. The views are beautiful and then at the top there is a very special armchair, which I helped transport with the Durona Team in the summer of 2020, made by the artist Andrea Bianconi. Of these works, which are part of the Sit Down To Have An Idea project, there are many around Italy, but this was the first on a peak ”.
