TREVISO. An authentic revolution, a drastic break with the recent past, in all respects: not only on a technical level but also on a mental level. On and off the pitch. Marco Bortolami, with his old and new staff, will take over Benetton Rugby the day after the last game of this unfortunate season, already having clear ideas on where and how to intervene, to revive the somewhat depressed fortunes of the Treviso oval world. «For better or for worse in our defeats there is always a pattern that repeats itself», says Bortolami, «I also noticed it in Glasgow and it will be what I will work on next year. But today it leaves a bad taste in my mouth, it means that in recent months we have not been able to find the solution: I am referring to the consistency of the execution, that is to be able to always do things well to limit the damage in case of difficulty. Here we are still very far from being competitive in Pro 14. An even more serious aspect is that this derives from the way we train and live off the pitch ».
So does it also depend on the lifestyle of the players? “Absolutely. And I’ll say more: 95% of the technical consistency goes through your own extra rugby mindset. Here Benetton will have to make a big leap in quality. I’m talking about the rigor and discipline to be kept beyond rugby, which is then reflected on the pitch. And that in these two years has not been our priority. In the past, due to a series of factors, we were able to find balances in this sense as well, without however repeating them consistently. This is an aspect that we can control: there is an element of compulsion and an element of learning. For example: a player arrives late to practice or without having done work at home, or performs poorly a play. Here, these are indicators of a certain lack of rigor. It’s about individual needs “
A truly total revolution, Bortolami. “Performance at this level is everyone’s choice. There will be technical innovations, of course, but the biggest revolution will be how we organize the day on and off the pitch, that is, not in what but in how, in methodology. We are already planning it with the staff in these weeks, we are at a good point: some concepts will be explained, others will just need to be adapted. The psychological one is one of the sides that I am most passionate about, the staff has also been chosen in this sense ».
Let’s move on to the more properly game aspect. «We are technically, aptly and physically deficient in contact: one influences the other. Even here two years ago we were dominant, then something got out of hand. In both aspects, psychological and mental, I tell you that we are completely determined and already aligned on the strategy to be adopted. After a season like this, some questions must be asked, in perspective there must necessarily be some big changes. And certainly the mea culpa also belongs to us coaches, me in the first place: we should have found different ways. So if you really want to change this bad habit, a healthy and good dose of realism will be indispensable ». –
